Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain – Promo Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 18, 2013 by drewturpin

I already own a copy of the original commercial release of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and I would highly recommend this first game of the franchise to any fan of RPGs.

This rare promo disc, in a near mint condition, was an ebay “buy it now” purchase for £12.  I have not seen another copy in recent years so I wouldn’t know what a fair price for this disc would be, however I would expect an amount around the £20 mark would be about right.

Silent Hill – Original Soundtrack

Posted in Miscellaneous, PC, Playstation 1 on October 6, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the official game soundtrack on CD which was originally released in 1999. The disc contains 42 tracks of ambient music from the first game in the franchise.

The music, created by Akira Yamaoka, has been recognised for producing a creepy, unnerving accompaniment to the game that added greatly to the overall play experience. The CD can be a little difficult to track down, but expect to pay about £5 if you are lucky to find one.

Gran Turismo – Promo Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on September 1, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the promo disc of the Playstation’s Gran Turismo, release in 1997 by Polyphony Digital. This game was one of the few that sold over 10 million copies on the Playstation, and was first in this very popular franchise.

This disc was picked up off ebay for about £6 which is a not too bad a price. I’ve not seen another one of these for a little while so pricing is difficult, however if you do track one down then expect to pay at least £10.

Resident Evil 1 & 2 – Controller

Posted in Playstation 1 on June 28, 2013 by drewturpin

Here we have a controller that was release by ASCII for the Playstation 1 versions of the Resident Evil series. This controller was release around the same time as Resident Evil 2, hence the very recognisable image on the front of the box.

However the instructions inform you as well as working for Resident Evil 2 it is also compatible with Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 1 Director’s Cut. In fact there is no reason why this controller can’t be used with Resident Evil 3 as well. Included is the box the controller came in, as well as the multi-language instruction manual and registration card.

Having tried out this controller it does take a bit of getting use to, however with some practice it becomes a useful peripheral.  Unusually all the shoulders buttons are now located in the middle of the controller above the Start and Select buttons.

The right hand side includes a “Gun Grip” with trigger, which has “Resident Evil” printed on the handle.

Locating a controller to buy shouldn’t prove too hard, however finding one boxed with instructions and registration card might prove much more difficult. I paid £15 (inclusive of postage and packing) for this controller from an ebay auction, and this also included a mint copy of the Platinum version of Resident Evil 2. This is a great price for both items and was probably down to the item description not specifying that the controller was the ASCII’s Resident Evil type. Expect to pay over £10 for the controller on its own and over £20 if you are lucky to find a boxed one complete with instructions and registration card. Also be aware that postage for this item would normally be relatively high, so pay attention to any delivery costs.

Resident Evil – Game Guide Book

Posted in Playstation 1 on June 7, 2013 by drewturpin

This is a game guide for the Playstation version of Resident Evil and, as you can see from the cover, is “totally unauthorized”. This small paperback guide, published by Brady Games, is of a particularly lower quality from the glossy guides we see nowadays. The paper quality is poor meaning the black and white screen shots are not the best and the page layout leaves a lot to be desired.

Resident Evil Guide (1)

However the guide itself is very well written which is probably why Brady Games were subsequently given the official license to produce future guides for the series. It is an interesting addition to my Resident Evil collection, and does not appear too often on ebay, however Amazon does have a few copies selling for around £10. This copy was picked up at a local bootsale for just ten pence.

Grand Theft Auto 2 – Alternative Version

Posted in Playstation 1 on May 3, 2013 by drewturpin

This is a little bit of an unknown rarity and hence can be picked up cheaply if you are into your GTA franchise games. I didn’t know this even existed until I stumbled across a picture of it on ebay.

Grand Theft Auto 2 (1)

At first glance it appears to be GTA 1 as it uses an identical cover picture, with just the title being changed. Other differences between this version and the standard version also include the manual and disc artwork. Although it is interesting to note that the map is the same as in the one that is in the standard version, which is confusingly titled “GTa2”.

Vagrant Story – Promo Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on March 22, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the promo disc of the Playstation’s Vagrant Story, developed and published in 2000 by Square (more famous for their Final Fantasy series of games). Although a role playing game at heart it does combine elements of other genres including puzzle solving and strategy.

This disc was picked up with a few others from an ebay seller, and I managed to get this one and four others for £10, which I was very pleased with. I’ve not seen another one of these since so it is difficult to put a price on this, however if you are lucky to track one down then expect to part with at least £10.
