Posted in PC, Playstation 1 on November 15, 2013 by drewturpin

Here we have a sealed pack of Die Hard Trilogy 2: Vendetta playing cards, which were a promotion items for the Playstation and PC release of the game. However I’m afraid I don’t know anymore than that.

Die Hard Trilogy Cards (1)

I picked up ten of these at a boot sale for 20 pence each. I sold nine on ebay for £5 and upwards, with this last one staying in my collection.

Silent Hill – Original Soundtrack

Posted in Miscellaneous, PC, Playstation 1 on October 6, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the official game soundtrack on CD which was originally released in 1999. The disc contains 42 tracks of ambient music from the first game in the franchise.

Silent Hill Soundtrack (1)

The music, created by Akira Yamaoka, has been recognised for producing a creepy, unnerving accompaniment to the game that added greatly to the overall play experience. The CD can be a little difficult to track down, but expect to pay about £5 if you are lucky to find one.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell – Collector’s Edition

Posted in PC on February 15, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the Collector’s Edition of the first game in the Splinter Cell franchise and was released for the PC. Included are the three main game discs which now include three new maps (Kola Cell, Vselka 1 and Vselka 2), and also a bonus disc containing  new game trailer and cinematics.

Splinter Cell CE (1)

The discs are stored in a study gatefold sleeve, which in turn is stored in a cardboard out sleeve. Finally the whole package comes in a high quality mini backpack displaying the Splinter Cell name.

Splinter Cell CE (2)

I have never seen one of these on ebay and the internet doesn’t seem to provide many details about this specific release of the game. Therefore I have no idea how rare it is or how much it is worth, but it is a nice little collectible all the same.

Resident Evil 4 – Chainsaw Controller

Posted in PC, Playstation 2 on February 12, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the official Limited Edition Chainsaw controller for the Playstation 2 and PC version of Resident Evil 4, this is number 35254 out of 50000. Each controller (which is based on the actual chainsaw in the game) has its own unique blood splatter artwork and come in a pretty decent display case. A rumble feature is included to give it that “realistic chainsaw feel”, and a rip cord which once pulled produces “authentic chainsaw sounds”.

RE4 Chainsaw (1)

The chainsaw controller does make the game harder to play when compared to a normal controller. But this is not necessarily a bad thing, as I have completed the game several times over as this controller adds a new challenge. I would perhaps say this is more of a collectable then an actually peripheral, and given the high build quality and the fact it come in a display case.

RE4 Chainsaw (2)

The case also has a drawer which stores the extension cable for the controller and also a USB adaptor allowing for it to be used on a PC. In addition there is also a compartment to store the game box.

RE4 Chainsaw (3)

I picked this up new from Amazon for £5 a few years ago, and really wished I had also purchased the GameCube version at the same time (which is yellow in colour). Expect to pay £20+ for this on ebay and do remember that postage on this item is likely to be expensive. I remember when I originally received this I was surprised at how big and heavy it was.

Sam & Max: Season One – Media Preview

Posted in PC on December 19, 2012 by drewturpin

Here we have all six episodes of “Sam & Max: Season one” (later renamed “Sam & Max Save the World”) on one PC-CD labelled up media preview.  It was originally released in 2006 as one of the first downloadable episodic games, and although this is not strictly retro the franchise certainly is.

Sam & Max Season 1 MC (1)

The titles of the episodes are “Culture Shock”, “Situation: Comedy”, “The Mole, the Mob, and the Meatball”, “Abe Lincoln Must Die!”, “Reality 2.0” and “Bright Side of the Moon”. This is the classic Sam & Max “point and click” adventure brought up to date with some tender loving care from Telltale Games, and I would thoroughly recommend a play through.

Sam & Max Season 1 MC (2)

This media preview disc was picked up at a bootsale for £1, and to date I have not seen another copy like this anywhere. Therefore putting a value on this item is difficult, however it does make for a fairly unique item in my PC collection.

System Shock – Enhanced CD Version

Posted in PC on December 5, 2012 by drewturpin

System Shock is now considered a classic but was criminally overlooked back when it was released in 1994. The combination of being a great game coupled with relatively low sales make this a highly sought after rarity. In addition the fact that this is the original enhanced CD version of the game makes it even rarer, as it was released a few months after the floppy disc version.  The CD version contained speech and allowed for high resolution graphics, resulting in a much better gaming experience. However this version sold very few copies due to either people not having sufficient hardware to run the game (no CD-ROM drive or inadequate graphics card) or had already bought the floppy disc version of the game.

System Shock (1)

The game comes complete in a big cardboard box and contains all the relevant documentation with everything in mint condition. The floppy disc version does appear on ebay regularly and tends to go for around £30 for one in a decent condition. The enhanced CD version does not appear that often and when it does it tends to be on ebay in America. Prices for the CD version range from £80 to £140 depending on condition and whether or not it is complete.

System Shock (2)

However I have yet to see a CD version anywhere that as in as good as condition as the one I have picked up, which makes this a real find.  I bough this from a charity shop a couple of years ago for just £1, to ease my guilt somewhat I did make a donation in the collection tin before I left.
