Acorn User – Issue 1

Posted in Acorn Atom, Books & Magazines on August 9, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of Acorn User magazine which was published in July 1982.  This particular issue spanned two months with issue two being published in September 1982, and the magazine going monthly thereafter. The magazine ran for an impressive 267 issues with the last issue being published in December 2003. This first issue was only 46 pages and covered both the Acorn Atom and BBC Micro.

Along with this magazine I also have an official Acorn User binder I picked up when I bought a BBC Micro B a few years back.

The magazine is another ebay purchase costing £6.99 on a “buy it now” auction, which I think is a good price considering it is in great condition. I have not seen any other copies on ebay, or indeed any of the binders either, so providing an actual price for these items would be difficult. As with any magazine the condition can vary, so if you are lucky to find one I would recommend contacting the seller to find out about the overall state of the magazine (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, writing etc).

Acornsoft Game Pack 1

Posted in Acorn Atom on May 31, 2013 by drewturpin

Here we have a complete copy of Acornsoft’s Game Pack 1, the first of many compilation tapes released by the company for the Acorn Atom.  This compilation, the best in my opinion, contains the three games “Asteroids”, “Sub Hunt” and “Breakout”.

I have not seen a copy of the first game pack anywhere for sale in the last few years, however other game packs (Acornsoft released 11 Game Packs in total) do appear very rarely on ebay and tend to go for between £20 and £30.

I would imagine this very first game would go for slightly more, although I have no intention of selling it. This was the very first computer game I ever bought, it was back in 1982 and cost me £11.50 (a lot of money for a teenager back then) from Broadway Electronics, a computer shop in Bedford.

BBC Micro User – Issue 1

Posted in Acorn Atom, Books & Magazines on December 3, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of  BBC Micro User magazine which was first published in March 1983 (although officially it was Volume 1 No. 1). This name only stuck for the first three issues before being re-titled The Micro User, and ran for an impressive 115 issues (Volume 10 No. 7).BBC Micro User

I picked up this copy, along with many more issues of the magazine, when I bought a BBC Micro B a few years back. I have not seen a copy for sale on ebay, so would not be able to provide an accurate price. If you are lucky enough to find one of these magazines then do check the overall state of it (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, writing etc).
