Manic Miner

Posted in ZX Spectrum on April 26, 2013 by drewturpin

Manic Miner is one of the most famous games for the ZX Spectrum, inspired by the game Miner 2049er and was written by the legendary Matthew Smith. Included here are the two different covers released in 1983 by Bug Byte, although I am not sure why there were two different ones. The Software Projects re-release was a result of a falling out about royalties between Matthew and Bug Byte. As a result Matthew left Bug Byte to form Software Projects, taking the rights to Manic Miner with him. Finally we have the budget release version from Mastertronic to complete the set.

All these versions can be picked up with relative ease from ebay, which is where I got these copies from. Expect to pay about £5 for the Bug Byte releases and less for the other versions.

Wesker’s Report

Posted in Playstation 2 on April 19, 2013 by drewturpin

This DVD was a pre-order bonus from GAME and Electronic Boutique stores for the Playstation 2 version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, and was originally released in Japan to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the series.  It is essentially a 20 minute documentary narrated by Albert Wesker using videos from previous Resident Evil games, and fills some of the gaps and plotlines between the first three instalments.

However the lack of any new videos or extras makes it one for the fans of the franchise only. I picked up this version, along with a copy of the Code: Veronica X game for under £2 on ebay, due to the listing being unclear. However expect to pay between £10 and £20 for a copy of the disc.

Sinclair Projects – Issue 1

Posted in Books & Magazines, ZX Spectrum on April 14, 2013 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of Sinclair Projects magazine which was first published in December 1982 by ECC Publications Ltd, who also published Sinclair User and Sinclair Programs. This bi-monthly magazine was for hobbyists of the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum as it contained DIY projects for these machines. Unfortunately the magazine only ran for 11 issues (December 1982 to August 1984), which I assume was due to there being little demand for projects which involved building hardware peripherals.

I picked up this copy on ebay for about £8, which I don’t think is too bad as it is in good condition. This magazine appears very rarely on ebay so prices are difficult to gauge, but expect to pay around about £10 for a complete copy in good condition. Also because of the age of the magazine the condition can vary, so I would always email the seller to get a better understating of the overall state of the magazine (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, writing etc).

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Posted in GameCube on April 5, 2013 by drewturpin

This was the last Zelda game released for the Nintendo GameCube, and was later released for the Wii (also making it the first Zelda game for the Wii). This was the thirteenth game in the Zelda canon however it was the first with a PEGI 12+ rating, meaning it was aimed at the more mature gamer. With the various delays in the production of this game it was released late into the life of the GameCube. Because of this sales were perhaps not as high as expected, in fact the Wii version sold about five times as many copies as the GameCube version.

The Legend of Zelda TP (1)

Expect to pay £40 and upwards for a decent conditioned copy of this game. The price reflects the fact it is a great game (and part of a great franchise) which sold relatively few copies on a console that was nearing the end of its commercial life.
