ICO – Promo and Demo Discs

Posted in Playstation 2 on November 23, 2012 by drewturpin

Here we have the full promo of the classic Playstation 2 game ICO, along with the demo disc and mini mag. The promo is your standard “blue printed” disc containing the full game and is in mint/new condition.

The demo disc is slightly more interesting as it comes in an exclusive cardboard sleeve, along with a miniature Official UK Playstation 2 magazine. This not only contains a review of the game, but also has a pull out ICO themed “Snakes and Ladders” style board game.

The promo disc is not particularly rare and can be picked up on ebay for around £10, therefore if you are into your promo discs this is an essential purchase. The demo disc and magazine do tend to be a bit rare, especially if you are looking for the pull out board game to be unused, so expect to pay slightly more that you would for the promo. This does defy the usual logic as more often than promo discs are more expensive then their demo disc counterparts, although this is due to the addition magazine/board game.

Classic Text Adventure Masterpieces

Posted in PC on November 22, 2012 by drewturpin

This PC compilation contains 33 of the finest Infocom text adventures released by Activision, who bought out Infocom in 1986. Included on the CD are  Arthur: The Quest for Excalibur, Ballyhoo, Beyond Zork, Border Zone, Bureaucracy, Cutthroats, Deadline, Enchanter, Hollywood Hijinx, Infidel, Journey, Leather Goddesses of Phobos, The Lurking Horror, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Moonmist, Nord and Bert Couldn’t Make Head or Tail of It, Planetfall, Plundered Hearts, Seastalker, Sherlock: The Riddle of the Crown Jewels, Sorcerer, Spellbreaker, Starcross, Stationfall, Suspect, Suspended, Trinity, Wishbringer, The Witness, Zork I, Zork II, Zork III and Zork Zero. Also included are an addition six adventures that have never been officially released before. These are the winners from the “Text Adventure Authorship Contest” which includes A Change in the Weather, The Magic Toyshop, The Mind Electric, The One That Got Away, Toonesia and Uncle Zebulon’s Will.

So all in all this is a huge compilation which contains a lot of historically significant interactive fiction. Bought this from Game many years ago brand new for £5 and it came in one of those big cardboard boxes that were common for PC games at that time. Unfortunately I got rid of the box, as I did with a lot my PC games back in the day as they just took up too much room. However the disc, case and inserts are all in a nearly new condition. Putting a price of this rare release is difficult as it hardly ever appears on ebay, however the few that are available through Amazon are priced at £150 or more. I assume these are complete with the outer cardboard box, but even so this does seem to be silly money.

Grand Theft Auto – Limited Edition

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 16, 2012 by drewturpin

This double disc “Limited Edition” version of the first game of the infamous franchise is a nice item if you are a collector of the series. It comes in a standard Playstation box, with a different front and back cover and a change of livery for the game disc from the original release.

The main extra with this “Limited Edition” is the inclusion of a soundtrack CD featuring music from the game (i.e. the car radio). This is a decent little package and can be seen regularly on ebay. Prices should be in the region of £10, just make sure it is complete with both discs, manual and maps.

Your Sinclair – Issue 1

Posted in Books & Magazines, ZX Spectrum on November 14, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of Your Sinclair magazine which was first published in January 1986. The magazine was essentially a rebranded version of Your Spectrum and was one of the first magazines of the day to include a cover mounted game (on cassette tape). The intention of the rebranding was to concentrate more on the Sinclair QL computer and future computers produced by Sinclair. However it wasn’t long before the magazine concentrated entirely on the ZX Spectrum.

It ran for 93 issues before finally closing due to the end of the commercial life of the ZX Spectrum, but did manage to outlast both Crash and Sinclair User. I picked up this copy, along with several other issues of the magazine, for £3 at a local bootsale. This magazine does not appear too often of ebay so prices are difficult to gauge, but expect to pick this up for under £10. Also because of the age of the magazine the condition can vary, so I would always email the seller to get a better understating of the overall state of the magazine (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, etc).

Silent Hill – Portuguese Release

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 9, 2012 by drewturpin

I am not exactly sure if this is a rarity but I would certainly say it was a bit of an oddity. Here we have an official Portuguese version of the Playstation classic Silent Hill.

Essentially this is the standard UK release including the English manual and inserts, but it does also contain a manual in Portuguese and an import sticker on the back of the case. This game was release in Portugal by Ecofilmes who were the official distributer of Playstation games at this time.

I picked this up from Gamestation earlier this year, but have absolutely no idea how they came by this. However at just 49p I think I’ve got myself a real bargain.

Metal Gear Solid – “Horizontal/Wide” Twin Pack

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 8, 2012 by drewturpin

This is a limited edition release of both Metal Gear Solid (Platinum version) and the Metal Gear Solid Special Missions pack, all wrapped up in a cardboard sleeve. The two games are the standard releases with the only differences being the cardboard sleeve, and the fact that “not to be sold separately” stickers are covering the barcodes at the back of the cases.

There are apparently three different versions of this twin pack and the one I have here is the “horizontal/wide” version as the games are placed side by side. Another variant is the “stacked” version where the games are placed side by side. Both the “stacked” and “horizontal/wide” versions were exclusive to the UK and had a similar design on the cardboard sleeve.

A third double pack commonly known the “vertical/tall” version was sold in Germany and had a completely different design on the cardboard sleeve. I picked this up from ebay for £12, another bargain due to a poor item description by the seller. The cardboard sleeve is in excellent condition considering its age. However expect to pay £20+ on ebay for a set in good condition, making sure you pay special attention to the sleeve as the condition of these can vary greatly.

Resident Evil 3 – Rental Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 2, 2012 by drewturpin

A rare rental version of the classic Playstation 1 game that comes in a clam case, a lot like the ones you use to get when you rented PS1 games from Blockbuster.

The insert is in one complete section, rather then a front and back insert you would get in the official PS1 version. The instructions are printed on the reverse of the insert, making this even more of a collectable in my opinion.

I do own two of these, with the other one unfortunately having some damage to the print on the front of the disc. This was due to having sticky tape on it which I was not entirely successful in removing.

This other copy did not include the insert or case, so was very pleased when this one appeared on ebay for just a “buy it now” price of £8. To put a real value to this item is difficult as I have only seen these appear twice on ebay, both of which I purchased. However I feel I have got myself a real bargain and also have something which is a little unusual in my Resident Evil collection.
