Your Spectrum – Issue 1

Posted in Books & Magazines, ZX Spectrum on October 30, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of Your Spectrum magazine which was first published in January 1984. The magazine was aimed at the more serious Spectrum user, although it did also cover games reviews. It ran for 21 issues before being rebranded/relaunched as Your Sinclair.

I picked up this copy, along with several other issues of the magazine, for £3 at a local bootsale. This magazine does not appear too often on ebay so prices are difficult to gauge, but expect to pick this up for about £10. Also because of the age of the magazine the condition can vary, so I would always email the seller to get a better understating of the overall state of the magazine (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, etc).

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Posted in Playstation 2 on October 19, 2012 by drewturpin

Here we have the enhanced version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty which was titled Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.  Not only is there an updated version of the original game but also the inclusion of lots of extra missions and, rather surprisingly, a skateboarding mini-game.

I pick up this one at Gamestation for £1.99 and was very pleased with the fact it was in a near mint condition. Price on ebay for this game use to be quite expensive (between £20 and £30), however you should be able to pick this up for around £10 nowadays and it is well worth the money.

Dino Crisis 2 – Promo Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 18, 2012 by drewturpin

This Capcom release is another promo which if probably a bit rarer that the original Dino Crisis promo disc. This was another ebay purchase which was advertised as “Dino Crisis & Dino Crisis 2” with Dino Crisis being the standard commercial release, and Dino Crisis 2 being a promo disc. No mention of this in the auction so it is always worth while checking out those photos. All in the auction cost me £6 (including postage and packing) but expect to pay over £20 for the promo disc alone.

Final Fantasy 7 – Rental Discs

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 18, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the extremely rare three disc rental edition of the classic Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation. I say extremely rare as I have never seen another copy before or since. These are not to be confused with the Final Fantasy 7 promo discs, as these ones were available to the public who rented their games from the likes of Blockbuster. There is no manual included as the instructions are printed on the back of the box, meaning the inlay is unique. The discs are in mint condition and appear never to have been used, which is very unusual for a rental game.

I did not even realise this version of this game existed, as it doesn’t make much sense to release a game that takes between 70 and 100 hours to complete as a rental. This was another ebay bargain at just £12 which is probably down to being listed as the standard Final Fantasy 7 game without manual (much like my purchase of the Final Fantasy 7 promo discs). Valuing this item is very difficult due to not ever seeing another copy, but I would gauge a figure of at least £100 (not that I am prepared to part with it).

Crash – Issue 1

Posted in Books & Magazines, ZX Spectrum on October 12, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the very first edition of ZX Spectrum dedicated Crash magazine which was first published in February 1984.  The magazine started out as a software catalogue that incorporate reviews and grew from there.  It ran for 98 issues before merging with Sinclair User from issue 123 although essentially this ‘merger’ brought to an end this much loved magazine.

I did actually buy the first edition all those years ago, but also threw it out (along with a load of other games related magazines) many years ago. I did manage to pick up the copy from ebay for £25, it is complete and it is very good condition seeing it is nearly 30 years old. This magazine does not appear too often of ebay so prices are difficult to gauge, although I have seen copies go for well over £50. Also because of the age of the magazine the condition can vary, so I would always email the seller to get a better understating of the overall state of the magazine (e.g. missing pages, rips, tears, etc).

Metal Gear Solid – “Stacked” Twin Pack

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 12, 2012 by drewturpin

This is a limited edition release of both Metal Gear Solid (Platinum version) and the Metal Gear Solid Special Missions pack, all wrapped up in a cardboard sleeve. The two games are the standard releases with the only differences being the cardboard sleeve, and the fact that “not to be sold separately” stickers are covering the barcodes at the back of the cases.

There are apparently three different versions of this twin pack and the one I have here is the “stacked” version as the games are placed on top of each other. Another variant is the “horizontal/wide” version where the games are placed side by side. Both the “stacked” and “horizontal/wide” versions were exclusive to the UK and had a similar design on the cardboard sleeve. A third double pack commonly known the “vertical/tall” version was sold in Germany and had a completely different design on the cardboard sleeve.

I picked this up from ebay for under a £10, another bargain due to a poor item description by the seller. However expect to pay £20+ on ebay for a set in good condition, making sure you pay special attention to the sleeve as the condition of these can vary greatly.

Shining Force 2

Posted in Sega Mega Drive/Mega CD on October 12, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the sequel to Shining Force (obviously) and is definitely the rarer of the two games that were released for the Sega Mega Drive.  It is defined as a “Strategy Role Playing Game with overhead tactical battles” and was more free roaming that the first game in the series.

I bought this new from GAME and from memory paid about £5 for it, as this was at a time when the Mega Drive was on its way out, with newer more powerful consoles on the scene. Expect to pay between £20 and £30 for a complete copy in good condition.
