Metal Gear Solid – Memory Card

Posted in Playstation 1 on December 12, 2012 by drewturpin

This is a silver “Metal Gear Solid” branded Playstation 1 memory card, and was a pre-order bonus for anyone who bought the game from Woolworths. The card, produced by Joytech, did come in a CD style case with front and back inserts however I just have the card on its own.

Metal Gear Solid Card

This is not particular rare as about 25,000 were produced, however expect to pay about £5 for the card alone and over £10 if you can find one in its own case. I bought this off ebay for about £4 as a bit of an impulse buy. The overall condition is not too bad, however I would like a complete one with case at some point.

Grand Theft Auto – Limited Edition

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 16, 2012 by drewturpin

This double disc “Limited Edition” version of the first game of the infamous franchise is a nice item if you are a collector of the series. It comes in a standard Playstation box, with a different front and back cover and a change of livery for the game disc from the original release.

The main extra with this “Limited Edition” is the inclusion of a soundtrack CD featuring music from the game (i.e. the car radio). This is a decent little package and can be seen regularly on ebay. Prices should be in the region of £10, just make sure it is complete with both discs, manual and maps.

Silent Hill – Portuguese Release

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 9, 2012 by drewturpin

I am not exactly sure if this is a rarity but I would certainly say it was a bit of an oddity. Here we have an official Portuguese version of the Playstation classic Silent Hill.

Essentially this is the standard UK release including the English manual and inserts, but it does also contain a manual in Portuguese and an import sticker on the back of the case. This game was release in Portugal by Ecofilmes who were the official distributer of Playstation games at this time.

I picked this up from Gamestation earlier this year, but have absolutely no idea how they came by this. However at just 49p I think I’ve got myself a real bargain.

Metal Gear Solid – “Horizontal/Wide” Twin Pack

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 8, 2012 by drewturpin

This is a limited edition release of both Metal Gear Solid (Platinum version) and the Metal Gear Solid Special Missions pack, all wrapped up in a cardboard sleeve. The two games are the standard releases with the only differences being the cardboard sleeve, and the fact that “not to be sold separately” stickers are covering the barcodes at the back of the cases.

There are apparently three different versions of this twin pack and the one I have here is the “horizontal/wide” version as the games are placed side by side. Another variant is the “stacked” version where the games are placed side by side. Both the “stacked” and “horizontal/wide” versions were exclusive to the UK and had a similar design on the cardboard sleeve.

A third double pack commonly known the “vertical/tall” version was sold in Germany and had a completely different design on the cardboard sleeve. I picked this up from ebay for £12, another bargain due to a poor item description by the seller. The cardboard sleeve is in excellent condition considering its age. However expect to pay £20+ on ebay for a set in good condition, making sure you pay special attention to the sleeve as the condition of these can vary greatly.

Resident Evil 3 – Rental Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on November 2, 2012 by drewturpin

A rare rental version of the classic Playstation 1 game that comes in a clam case, a lot like the ones you use to get when you rented PS1 games from Blockbuster.

Resident Evil 3 rental (1)

The insert is in one complete section, rather then a front and back insert you would get in the official PS1 version. The instructions are printed on the reverse of the insert, making this even more of a collectable in my opinion.

I do own two of these, with the other one unfortunately having some damage to the print on the front of the disc. This was due to having sticky tape on it which I was not entirely successful in removing.

This other copy did not include the insert or case, so was very pleased when this one appeared on ebay for just a “buy it now” price of £8. To put a real value to this item is difficult as I have only seen these appear twice on ebay, both of which I purchased. However I feel I have got myself a real bargain and also have something which is a little unusual in my Resident Evil collection.

Dino Crisis 2 – Promo Disc

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 18, 2012 by drewturpin

This Capcom release is another promo which if probably a bit rarer that the original Dino Crisis promo disc. This was another ebay purchase which was advertised as “Dino Crisis & Dino Crisis 2” with Dino Crisis being the standard commercial release, and Dino Crisis 2 being a promo disc. No mention of this in the auction so it is always worth while checking out those photos. All in the auction cost me £6 (including postage and packing) but expect to pay over £20 for the promo disc alone.

Final Fantasy 7 – Rental Discs

Posted in Playstation 1 on October 18, 2012 by drewturpin

This is the extremely rare three disc rental edition of the classic Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation. I say extremely rare as I have never seen another copy before or since. These are not to be confused with the Final Fantasy 7 promo discs, as these ones were available to the public who rented their games from the likes of Blockbuster. There is no manual included as the instructions are printed on the back of the box, meaning the inlay is unique. The discs are in mint condition and appear never to have been used, which is very unusual for a rental game.

I did not even realise this version of this game existed, as it doesn’t make much sense to release a game that takes between 70 and 100 hours to complete as a rental. This was another ebay bargain at just £12 which is probably down to being listed as the standard Final Fantasy 7 game without manual (much like my purchase of the Final Fantasy 7 promo discs). Valuing this item is very difficult due to not ever seeing another copy, but I would gauge a figure of at least £100 (not that I am prepared to part with it).

Metal Gear Solid – “Stacked” Twin Pack

Final Fantasy 7 – Promo Discs

Posted in Playstation 1 on September 19, 2012 by drewturpin

Final Fantasy 7 was the game that launched the Final Fantasy franchise onto the Playstation in Europe. It also raised the profile of RPGs with console owners that believed the genre was only for PC gamers.

What we have here is the very rare three disc promo edition in excellent condition, not to be confused with the Final Fantasy 7 rental discs that were available from the likes of Blockbuster. These were picked up on ebay for just £15, which was very cheap and is probably down to being listed as the standard Final Fantasy 7 game without manual. Expect to pay £80 and upwards for a complete set of discs in this sort of condition.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

Posted in Playstation 1 on August 17, 2012 by drewturpin

This has become a little bit of a cult classic for the Playstation 1, being the first in the Legacy of Kain series. The game is essentially an RPG, but with the main protagonist (Kain) being a vampire, murdered and out for revenge against those that have wronged him. As you would expect, being a vampire, sunlight damages your health whilst sucking the blood of innocent passers by and townsfolk increases it.

Overall this is a game well worth playing if you are into you RPGs. I managed to pick this up for under £10, but expect to pay around the £20 mark for a good conditioned copy. I have also been fortunate enough to pick up the Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain promo disc.
